Polocrosse is a competitive equestrian team sport, originally developed in Australia. It combines Polo, Lacrosse, and Netball, in a fun and exciting sport. Sometimes referred to as “poor mans polo”, Polocrosse is NOT the same as polo and only requires one horse! It is played on a 55m x 146m field, that is divided in to 3 zones; 2 end zones and a midfield.
The sport is played 3 against 3 in a series of timed Chukkas. Players vie for the ball with a netted racquet in an attempt to pick it up and pass it to the goal scoring player. The most goals in the chukka series wins the game!
There are different levels of play called Grades or Divisions. In general, the Grades are placed as follows:
D Grade = new/never played/timid (playing at a walk/trot)
C Grade = knows all of the rules, but not yet playing strategy (playing at a trot/canter)
B Grade = rules and strategy (playing at a canter/gallop)
A Grade = high level play at gallop with strategy
NEW FROM 2021! INTRODUCING "BLUE BANDAGE DIVISION"
The introduction of Blue Bandage to Polocrosse in Canada has proven to be a flying success in it's inaugural year, 2021, creating a string of excellent upcoming horses ready to move in to Grades for the next playing season.
Blue Bandage was created with the new playing horse in mind. This division allows players of any Grade or experience level to bring in new, green, or otherwise unsure horses in to a tournament environment without worrying about close contact play and striking. A "NO TOUCHY" game play, there is no contact allowed between horses and between players racquets. This allows the horse to gradually and safely become accustomed to the flow of the play without the contact pressure of the normal Grades. Unlike the normal Grades, there is no restrictions on the speed of the game, only on the contact.
